An Empirical Investigation of Four Strategies for Serializing Schedules in Transaction Processing

A database management system (DBMS) is a very large program that allows users to create and maintain databases. A DBMS has many capabilities. This study will focus on the capability known as transaction management, the capability to provide correct, concurrent access to the database by many users at the same time. If a DBMS did not provide transaction management, livelocks, deadlocks, and non-serializable schedules could occur. A livelock can occur when a transaction is waiting on a locked data item, and another transaction appears. After the data item is unlocked, the second transaction locks the data item, which causes the first transaction to continue waiting. Conceivably, the first transaction could wait indefinitely to lock the data item. This situation is called livelock. Deadlock is a situation in which each member of a set of two or more transactions is waiting to lock an item currently locked by some other transaction in the set. None of the transactions can proceed, so they all wait indefinitely. A schedule is serial if for every pair of transactions, all of the operations of one transaction execute before any of the operations of the other transaction. A schedule is serializable if its effect on the database is the same as some serial execution of the same set of transactions. A schedule is nonserializable if its effect on the database is not equivalent to that of any serial schedule which processes the same transactions. The scheduler is a component of the DBMS, and it is responsible for resolving any livelocks, deadlocks, or non-serializable schedules that occur. This study looks specifically at non-serializable schedules. There are many methods by which the scheduler can serialize non-serializable schedules. This study proposes and examines four strategies to detect and resolve non-serializable schedules. Computer simulation is used to examine the four strategies. These strategies reduce a nonserializable schedule to a serializable or a serial schedule, thus eliminating the possibility of incorrectly updating data items within a database. It is shown experimentally that, of the four strategies, the one that delays the transaction which has executed the least number of steps until non-serializability is detected is the best

Worship Styles, Music and Social Identity

    Get PDF
This study explored worship style, music and social identity from a communication perspective. Specifically, this study was interested in understanding the variables that influence worship music preference. Results indicated that Missouri Synod Lutherans who prefer traditional worship components identify more strongly with the larger organization, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS). Moreover, music preference strongly predicts worship style preference. In addition, parishioners perception of self-disclosure in hymns and praise songs was also examined. Results indicated that certain dimensions of self-disclosure are more prevalent in hymns and praise songs than others and perceived self-disclosure is stronger with those who attend a contemporary worship service than those who attend a traditional service. Research participants completed a questionnaire survey, which utilized the Revised Self-Disclosure Scale to measure their perception of self-disclosure through worship music and the Identification with a Psychological Group scale to measure their identification with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Additionally, the survey measured music preference, worship preferences, lifestyle values and religiosit

Poster Title: Let’s Play KAHOOT! Teaching Epocrates Through Online Game-Based Learning to High School Students. Background: The Florida State University College of Medicine hosts a one-week residential summer program on campus for high school students. The Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity & Excellence (SSTRIDE) Summer Institute motivates students to excel academically, introduces students to a variety of clinical settings, provides standardized test preparation for ACT and SAT, provides mentoring, exposes students to college life, gives students a perspective on the life of a medical student, expose students to certain aspects of the medical school curriculum through interaction with faculty and participation in faculty led presentations about medical topics, and inspires students to pursue careers in health-care professions. The opportunity arose for the Maguire Medical Library to conduct the Informatics session of the SSTRIDE Summer Institute. An hour long informatics sessions is given during each week-long camp. Mobile health technology is discussed with the group followed by learning how to use Epocrates® through the online game-based learning tool KAHOOT! Methods: Over the past five years, the Maguire Medical Library has extended their presence by becoming integrated into the SSTRIDE experience, taking on expanded faculty roles as needs were presented. The librarians demonstrated their usefulness by participating in the evolution of the Informatics session, by moving the learning content from a plug-and-play Jeopardy game to KAHOOT! followed by taking the leadership role of teaching the SSTRIDE Informatics session. Conclusions: The possibilities for a medical librarian in a college of medicine are encouraging and require librarians to integrate themselves in the designing of objectives and learning opportunities outside of the library itself. Identifying these opportunities, however small, has demonstrated how increase library involvement can strengthen not only the SSTRIDE program but is value added to the overall mission of the Florida State University College of Medicine

Worship styles, musicand social identity: A communication study

This quantitative study investigates music and worship style preferences. A survey measured participants\u27 worship and music preferences in order to further examine the relationship between the two. Multiple and logistic regressions were significant indicating that preferred music genres can be used to predict one\u27s worship style preference. Further investigation used Social Identity Theory to examine the conflict that often occurs within churches over music and worship styles. Therefore, the survey included the Identification with a Psychological Group scale to measure participants\u27 identification with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Multiple regression results showed a significant overall prediction of organizational identity, indicating that Missouri Synod Lutherans who prefer traditional or formal worship components identify more strongly with the larger organization, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS)
